It seems ironic that for Christmas break I have quite a to-do list. But that is life for a college student who is also a full-time mom.
First on my list (and the thing I am least looking forward to doing) is potty training Riley. He so needs to be out of diapers. I would have started sooner, but with me going to school, I didn't want to put that on my mom or my mother-in-law. Today is our first attempt at "big boy underwear" and so far we're 0 for 6. I know it will come along - it's just the first few days that are really trying. He's a hard boy to motivate, even with rewards. I think that is my biggest dilemma with this, is trying to figure out some way to motivate him. Any suggestions?
My next project is to organize my cook book. It has become out of control. During this summer I thought I would organize it, and I got it separated into two books - one with recipes I use frequently, and one with recipes I don't use often. That's about as far as I got. I'm tired of trying to find my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe in the meat section.
Organizing my house is next. It's really not too bad. Downstairs is fairly well organized - mostly because that is all people see of my house and so I need to have it look nice. My bedroom and the upstairs hall closet are the places I have been stuffing things when I didn't have time to, or didn't want to, find the proper home for things. I would really like for my bedroom not to become a storage room.
Other than those three things, I'm going to try and take it easy until next semester. There are a few concerts and such that I want to go to, but nothing I have to go to. I'm basically done with Christmas shopping. The only thing I have left to do in that area is take the kids shopping for Ben's presents. We haven't wrapped anything yet, because I KNOW Riley (not to mention Pumpkin and Freckles) will unwrap everything. It will be quite a change waking up on Christmas morning and suddenly finding lovely wrapped packages under the tree, where there were no presents there Christmas Eve.

Wow, An Award!

Julie from Mes Bijoux has nominated me for the Kreativ Blogger Award. I feel so honored. Like I wrote to her, it's good for me to blog, but it's great when other people enjoy what I write. So thank you, Julie, for sharing the love, so to speak.Along with the award is a meme, kind of like a tag. I always love reading these types of things about other people, and I hope you all are not bored to tears upon reading mine.
7 things I've done before
1. Lived in Vancouver, WA. Loved it.
2. Given birth to three children - one girl and two boys.
3. Was the Drum Major in marching band in high school. I would rather have marched with my piccolo but, oh well.
4. Donated blood - several times, and it always leaves me woozy.
5. Written really cheesy poems that only Ben has ever read. Thank goodness.
6. Earned a 4.0 my first semester in college.
7. Took gymnastics when I was about 12. I could even do a cartwheel on the balance beam.
7 things I do now
1. Go back to college. Finals are only two weeks away!
2. Babysit my parents. Long story.
3. Watch HEROES and wait for LOST to come back on TV.
4. Direct my ward choir. Favorite calling so far.
5. Change diapers. My plan is to potty train Riley during my Christmas break. Pray for me, would you?
6. Make cookies. I'm addicted.
7. Tell myself to be patient and grow out my hair...again.
7 things I want to do
1. Have food storage.
2. Spend more quality time with my kids.
3. Keep my house clean on a regular basis.
4. Read more good books.
5. Become debt free.
6. Get my Bachelor's Degree
7. Write a book.
7 things that attract me to the opposite sex (or to Ben, since I caught him)
1. He is my best friend.
2. He's really nice to me - even when I don't deserve it.
3. He is patient with my insane family.
4. He looks like Dean Cain. I think it's just a perk.
5. He's athletically inclined.
6. He has great brown eyes, and I always knew I'd marry someone with blue eyes.
7. He's not afraid to be himself.
7 Favorite Foods
1. Chocolate
2. My mom's homemade bread, hot out of the oven with lots of butter. Mouth watering now.
3. Raspberries
4. Perfectly ripe peaches - I'm picky that way.
5. My mother-in-law's strawberry and strawberry-rhubarb jam. Oh my. Imagine that on my mom's homemade bread. Heavenly!
6. Fettuccine Alfredo. Olive Garden's is good, but mine is better.
7. A good American cheeseburger. Preferably from Brad's with an order of fries. Or Carl's Jr.'s. Or Wendy's. Or Dairy Queen. Or Burger King.
7 things I Say Most Often:
1. Riley, stop hitting.
2. Riley, stop pulling the cat's tail.
3. Riley, what did I say about pulling the cat's tail?
4. Riley, do you need a time out?
5. Riley, don't throw rocks in Grandma Jeanne's pond.
6. Riley, what did I tell you about throwing rocks in Grandma Jeanne's pond?
7. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Now, I'm supposed to tag seven people for this award and meme. But, since Julie stole a couple of mine I would have nominated, including herself, I don't have seven. So just be happy with who I have, OK? I don't know that many people who blog.
1. Abe his random thoughts on his way to work are sometimes funny, sometimes thoughtful.
2. Laurel she's a mom with four girls, who keep her life very interesting.
3. My Other Lori, but her blog is private, so sorry. Her pictures are great, and so is her take on life. She has six kids and I've never known anyone who enjoys her kids more.
(Here is where I run out of people because Julie already did this and I would have nominated her, Melissa - check out her tutus for girls, Tearese - oh to be able to capture things the way she does, and Cardine. Bacon, anyone?)

Taking Compliments
I know this is something I've never been good at. I'll usually deflect the comment right back at the person who gave it and say that whatever they commented of me isn't as nice as that same thing they have. Confused? Here's an example from my study group last night.
Four of us, three girls and one guy, are studying for Nutrition. The girl sitting next to me has this beautiful handwriting that has real personality. I commented on it by saying:
"I love your handwriting. It has such personality"
"Oh, it doesn't look like this after an hour or so of writing. It progressively gets worse. I was just admiring yours and how tidy it is."
"No, mine is so boring!" I say.
"No, yours is great, mine is so sloppy," said another girl in the group.
Meanwhile, the boy studying with us slowly and quietly shuts his notebook, as to not reveal the "style" of his handwriting. Too funny.
I just think it's interesting how (and I'm making a generalization, but I think it's pretty accurate) most girls have trouble accepting compliments. It's like we're never happy with what we have. I don't notice guys doing that so much. But then again, you usually don't hear guys saying things like, "Dude, you have awesome handwriting," do you?

Swimming
The weather has been getting hotter lately, so we decided to cool off today by going to the pool. I took my kids and four of my nieces with me. The pool was great, and even though the indoor pool was closed, the outdoor pool wasn't overly crowded.
I love to see the different types of people who come to the pool. Most of them are kids around the age of my kids. They come to splash and have fun and play. It's amazing what a good time they have!
Then there are the moms who come to socialize while their kids are swimming. Or moms who are just watching while their kids swim. A word to the wise from my sister-in-law: when just observing from the sidelines, make sure to wear clothing that dries quickly as you may have to jump in to get your kid when he has swam out farther than he intended. ;)
Then there are the teenagers, coming to get skin cancer. Once upon a time, I too was a crazy teenager who "laid out" in order to turn from a pasty white to a nice brown color. It never worked. I would burn, peel, and fade. I tan better now than I ever did as a kid, but if I were interested in getting myself tan, I definitely would not want to inflict the public with my whiteness. The words, "I'm blind! I can't see!" come into mind. I'm not a farmer, but boy do my arms have the tan to rival them!
All in all it was a good day. Riley loves the water and found out he can walk down the ramp into the water. He was going up and down all afternoon. We headed home before it turned too cloudy. Now, if I could just get those clouds to rain!

Getting Healthy
So the other day I was reading a friend's blog and she had written about accomplishing her New Year's Resolution of losing 16 pounds by the time her family went to Hawaii, which is this week. It really encouraged me to get on track with my health. I eat whatever I want, and I never exercise. Yes, I know, naughty naughty.
Well, I didn't really want to do it by myself. And it's a lot easier to do it along with someone else, so I said to Ben that I bet I could lose 15 pounds before he could. "Bring it on," says Ben. I know he'll get there faster, but at least this way he is in the same boat as me, and when he is home he won't be eating 'bonbons' in front of me while I'm trying to be good.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to share this on my blog because I have read articles stating when you are trying to accomplish something important, it's best not to tell everyone because if you don't succeed there will be too much disappointment. Well, to heck with that article. Besides, not that many people read my blog.
So, I have started a sister blog to this blog. There is a link on this blog under 'Links' that will take you to my blog about my successes and failures of my goal to lose 15 pounds. Those of you who are interested can cheer me on when I do well and shake your finger at me when I don't. Go ahead, check it out. Thanks! :)

Rain
Hasn't this rainy weather been lovely? It smells so good!
When I was a teenager, a good friend of mine used to say that when it rained it smelled like 'wet dirt'. I didn't really agree with her until years later when Ben, Melanie, and I moved to Vancouver, WA. When it rained there it didn't smell like anything. But here in this beautiful desert....ahhhh, lovely!
Besides, I don't have to wash my car anymore - the rain did it for me! Thanks, rain!

The Parental Cycle
My parents are technologically challenged. That's all there is to it. Don't even ask about what it was like when they decided to be up-to-date and get cell phones. The other day my mom was trying to tell my brother I had a blog, but she couldn't remember the name and so she said to him, "It rhymes with fog." Yes. Apparently, this is my web fog.
Well, the other day my dad was trying to call in an order to Brad's. He kept calling the correct number (or so he says) but wasn't getting connected. So my mom tried. That wasn't working either. So my niece, Kristina, comes up the stairs and there the two of them sit at the table. My mom, with her glasses down on the end of her nose. My dad, with his glasses down on the end of his nose. They are both staring at the phone. It has a digital display so you can see what number you dialed.
"Is that the right number?!" yells my dad.
"I don't know," yells back my mom. "Turn on the light, I can't see."
My mom says the only reason I get to laugh at her when things like this happen is because I will be in the same place one day. Oh, please no. Take away all electronic devices and lock me up with my fuzzy slippers and TV dinners. Just put me out of my misery before that day. Please.

Books and too much TV
Now that Ben and I have finished LOST Season Three I find myself at nights flipping through the five or six channels we have. There is not much on. I usually end up watching some PBS documentary, which usually involves one wild animal devouring another. I need something to do.
I have read all of the books in the house, which isn't saying much. Buying books hasn't been high on my priority list. I love reading, but feel overwhelmed with all the choices. I like a wide variety of books; I'll read almost anything as long as it's interesting and keeps me turning pages. Once for a book club the book chosen was a romance novel by Anita Stansfield and I said to myself, "Are you kidding me? There is no way this will be worth the read." I couldn't put the stupid thing down!
So what should I read? Does anyone have some feedback on some great authors or books? I feel very inadequate in my reading history; I haven't even read some of the classics. Maybe that is where I should start. Anyway, any help would be great!

51 Things You May Not Know About Me
I read this on someone else's blog and thought it was fun. I adapted it because some of the questions were inappropriate and some were just dumb.
1. What is in the back seat of your car right now?
Carter's and Riley's booster seats, Melanie's trash that she hasn't thrown away yet, some smashed fish crackers, and probably sand since I haven't cleaned my van since our Easter trip to Cathedral Gorge.
2. When was the last time you threw up?
When I was pregnant with Riley, I think. So probably about 3 1/2 years ago. Hallelujah!
3. Name three people who made you smile today.
Riley, he was being goofy; Carter, who came up and gave me a hug out of nowhere; my nephew Alex, who was webbing me like Spiderman from his mom's suburban.
4. What were you doing at 8 this morning?
Debating on whether or not to send Melanie to school. We opted for her to stay home and rest and relax. She caught the same cold I have.
5. What were you doing 30 minutes ago?
Changing Riley's diaper and getting him ready for bed.
6. What will you be doing three hours from now?
Probably telling myself to go to bed instead of watching another episode of LOST.
7. What is the last thing you said aloud?
"Not right now, Riley. We already brushed your teeth and we're not eating again."
8. What is the best ice cream flavor?
My absolute favorite is from Baskin & Robbin's and it's called Cappuccino and Espresso Concerto. But it probably has coffee in it somewhere along the lines, so I don't get it anymore. So usually anything with chocolate.
9. What was the last thing you had to drink?
A glass of milk.....with some cookies.
10. What are you wearing right now?
Jeans, a t-shirt, and my decrepit slippers.
11. What was the last thing you ate?
Cookies.....with a glass of milk.
12. Have you bought any clothing this week?
Yes, underwear for Melanie, and she would die if should knew I put that on here!
13. When was the last time you ran?
Are we talking about seriously running or chasing after children who are running toward the street? Then since the last time I played tennis, which is probably 3 years ago or more and 5 days ago when Riley kept getting off by himself at Cathedral Gorge.
14. What was the last sporting event you ever watched?
Tennis, but I don't remember who was playing.
15. Who is the last person you emailed?
Ben.
16. Ever go camping?
I used to with my family, but since I got married and had kids it means I have to clean up all the mess and that doesn't interest me as much.
17. Do you have a tan?
Yes. A permanent farmer's tan. Seriously, it will not go away.
18. Do you drink soda through a straw?
Yes, because usually it has ice and my teeth are sensitive.
19. What did your last IM say?
I don't know. I have it disabled because my computer has issues when it turns on.
20. Are you someone's best friend?
Yes.
21. What are you doing tomorrow.
The same thing as always. Send Melanie to school, run errands and try to keep the boys busy.
22. Where is your mom right now?
Just a few miles away. Probably fixing my dad supper.
23. What color is your watch?
I have a brown one and two silver ones.
24. What do you think of when you think of Australia?
Well, it used to be Crocodile Dundee. Then I had kids and we watched Finding Nemo, and now because I have become addicted to LOST, I think of LOST.
25. Would you consider plastic surgery.
Absolutely not. Yuck and gross and ouch and no thank you!
26. What is your birthstone?
Is it sad that I can't even remember? I think it's Blue Zircon, but I'm not sure.
27. Do you go in at a fast food restaurant or go through the drive thru.
Most likely the drive through.
28. How many kids do you want?
Three. Even though Riley was a "surprise" we're good with three.
29. Do you have a dog?
No, I'm more of a cat person, but I do like dogs. Except for the little presents they leave on your lawn.
30. Last person you talked to on the phone?
My sister-in-law, Tonia. She called to see if I was still alive after my couple days of a nasty cold.
31. Have you met anyone famous?
Yes. Karl Malone. He signed a hat for me when he came to Cedar City years ago.
32. Any plans today?
No. I got my laundry done and that was all that was on my list.
33. How many states have you lived in?
Two. Washington and Utah.
34. Ever go to college?
Yes, for a semester, but I am returning to SUU this fall.
35. Where are you right now?
In my basement.
36. Biggest annoyance in my life right now.
Hmmm, I don't get annoyed at much. Things drive me crazy more than annoy me. There's a difference between the two for me. So the biggest thing that drives me crazy right now is when I see Riley doing something he's not supposed to, and I say to him, "Riley, please don't do that," and then he does it again. AHHHHHHH!!!!
37. Last song you listened to?
The theme song from Ben 10.
38. Are you allergic to anything?
No.
39. Favorite pair of shoes you wear all the time?
Some brown ones I bought at Payless about five years ago. I am dreading the day when they finally give up the ghost!
40. Are you jealous of anyone?
Not people, but more likely qualities others have. Have you seen that scene in You've Got Mail where Meg Ryan zings Tom Hanks? Sometimes, I wish I had the gusto to do that when I'm frustrated with someone.
41. Is anyone jealous of you?
I highly doubt it.
42. What time is it?
7:26 p.m. MST.
43. Do any of your friends have children?
Yes, most of the people I see on a regular basis have kids.
44. Do you eat healthy?
Not as well as I should.
45. What do you usually do during the day?
Get up, get Melanie ready for school and out the door, get in the shower, get the boys occupied with something so I can practice my flute, fix lunch, lay Riley down for a nap, play with Carter, hang out in the afternoon, fix dinner, get the kids ready for bed. After that it depends on what I feel like doing. But that's my typical day.
46.Do you hate anyone right now?
No. But there is one person who still makes me crazy when I think about them. Seriously, I could send them my therapy bill for all the stupid things they said to me.
47. Do you use the word "hello" daily?
If I pass someone, I usually say "hi" or "hello."
48. What are your feelings on chocolate?
Remember the question about eating healthy, well this question is the problem. I think chocolate should be a food group, and then my dietary pyramid would be more well-rounded. No shape puns intended.
49. How old will you be on your next birthday?
25. Oh, you want the truth? Fine. 31. Are you happy now?
50. Have you ever been to Six Flags?
No.
51. How did you get one of your scars?
I was helping my mom clean rooms at the motel where she worked when I was about 10 or so. Another maid asked me to help her chase a prairie dog out of a room she was cleaning. I decided to be brilliant and try and catch it. I did. It bit me. The maid was fired. What a great story, huh?
Well, that was fun. Hope you enjoyed my craziness!

Here goes
Hi everyone. I honestly don't know how many people will read this. Maybe three. But, it's been fun reading other people's blogs, so I thought I would hop on the bandwagon!
I am back home in Cedar City! Yeah! Panguitch was fine, but as Dorothy says, "There's no place like home." I'm sure some find the simple life of Cedar quite bland, but it's perfect for me. We have been here since November and are attempting to purchase our first home. It's a townhome in the Cedar Park area. It's smaller than where we are now living and it doesn't have a garage, but they are new, inexpensive and they will be OURS! No more wasting rent every month. After doing that for 11 years, Ben and I are ready to settle down. We haven't finalized anything but we have an appointment Friday to look at one of the models that will soon be finished. We should have a more secure plan of what we're doing by this weekend.
Ben is still teaching in Panguitch at Silverado Boys Ranch. It is a therapeutic boarding school for boys who have trouble functioning in a regular school system. Many of the boys there have substance abuse problems. He is truly enjoying his work. He has always wanted to be a teacher and Silverado has given him the environment to truly teach. Not discipline spoiled kids in a school where discipline is non-existent. He commutes during the week by leaving Monday mornings and coming home Thursday evenings. Most people thought we were crazy to make this living arrangement, but it has worked for us. I've said before I was living in Panguitch, but my life was over here. We felt our kids were missing opportunities they could have if we moved to Cedar. I think it's lonely for Ben sometimes, but we work it out, and it's so cute to see how excited all of us get on Thursday afternoons!
I am going back to SUU this fall. It's something I have always wanted to do. I attended one semester and then half of another before we moved to Vancouver, WA. I actually loved college. I didn't apply myself like I could have in high school, so I always thought I wasn't very smart. But that first semester showed me that when I work hard I can get things done. I have been accepted into the music program at SUU. I have kept up my flute playing on and off since high school and had the opportunity to play with the Orchestra of Southern Utah for one season before we moved to Panguitch. I was really nervous for my audition, which I didn't know I had to do until after I decided to do a music major. I decided, why not go for it? I know it will be a lot of work, but music has always been something I love. You can learn so much more than just music by studying it.
Melanie is nine and in 4th grade. It doesn't matter how old she is, whenever I say how old she is it makes me feel old! She is a smart girl who loves to read, write, and draw. She is such a good helper around the house, unless she is acting like her mother and sasses me. Ben just sits back and giggles sometimes when he listens to us together. He says it reminds him of me arguing with my mom. I remember what I was like when I was a teenager and I am NOT looking forward to another me! But, my mother cursed me when she said, "I hope one day you have a daughter just like you!" Thanks, Mom.
Carter is five and will be starting kindergarten this fall. We delayed his enrollment because we felt one more year to emotionally mature would be good for him, and I'm glad with the decision we've made. He is such a sweetheart. He has such a loving and tender nature just like his dad. He can play rowdy games with his friends, but turns around and says, "Mom, guess what? I love you." He is also the one to translate for me what Riley says when I can't understand him.
Speaking of the terrible twos....there's Riley! For as cute and funny as he is he is equally frustrating. He is the curious child who has to touch everything. He wants to see what happens when he straight out dumps a full glass of milk on the table. He isn't concerned with my reaction to his choice, he is just watching to see where the milk goes. I think he is going to make me go gray earlier than I would like.
Well, I think that sums things up for now. One day I'll get handy and figure out how to download pictures onto my computer and post them with a blog. But one thing at a time. I'm not as young as I used to be!
